Biosketch Dr. Kang is an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at San Diego State University and Director of the Manufacturing Intelligence Lab (MIL). His research interests include multimodal sensing, machine vision, sensor fusion, artificial intelligence (AI), physics-informed AI, digital twins, edge AI, and agentic AI for smart and autonomous manufacturing. His work spans metal additive manufacturing, subtractive manufacturing, shipbuilding and marine manufacturing, semiconductor and display manufacturing, infrastructure monitoring, robotics, and human–machine interaction. Prior to joining SDSU, Dr. Kang developed computational lithography technologies to improve nanoscale patterning accuracy for next-generation semiconductor manufacturing at Intel. He also led the development of AI-based optical inspection systems that were successfully commercialized and deployed on Samsung’s display manufacturing lines. He received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering and M.S. in Management, along with a Certificate in Management of Technology, from the Georgia Institute of Technology.
